World of Kurt
One night In New York with Sonic Youth, Spalding Rockwell,
and Amanda Lepore -
Kurt goes Cobain I'm in New York, on the corner of Greenwich and Canal Street, standing on the stoop in the freezing cold, singing to myself. People passing by don't even bat an eye; this is the city where anything goes, after all. I'in wailing for my friend Nicole to get back from her hus band's office with keys because she's locked herself out of her apartment. Nicole is one half of dance punk duo Spalding Rockwell, and her husband of five years, Chris, is the founder and head of Matador Records - home of indie bands like Interpol, Mogwai and Arab Strap. A cab pulls up, and, resplen- dent in white fur and oversized Gucci shades, Mrs Lombardi emerges to plant a kiss on my check. "It's so cosy you're here! Have I got fun planned out for you!"
Nicole is the indie version of Paris Hilton. Both have Chanel and Dior bursting out of their closets, but Nicole mixes it with the most divine charity-shop finds from a recent
three-month tour..
